river boats or other tours

Wow - I%26#39;m really seeing mixed reviews about river boat touring. Some say fun, some say gets quickly boring. Anyone with recent opinions? We%26#39;ll be there for four days next week and it does sound like an all day thing without great scenery.

Are there any tours worth doing? I know about the various walking ghost tours, etc. What about guided vehicle tours of one kind or another? Recommendations?

Lastly, we will not have a car and will be staying on the border of the French Quarter. I read people%26#39;s post about ';so much to do'; in N.O., but I%26#39;m starting to wonder. Yes, lots of restaurants, clubs, and walking the Quarter. (And we could happily spend 4 days doing that!) But what else is there to do?

No interest in museums. No car so can%26#39;t leave the city or go far afield. This isn%26#39;t meant to be an insult, but even reading the attractions section of N.O. I can%26#39;t find other ';must do'; items. Suggestions?

Thanks!

river boats or other tours

Don%26#39;t know about ';must do'; but a few of the things we did last year were: street car ride to the Garden District, Harrahs casino, River boat {less then 2 hours}, horse drawn carriage through the Quarter. We will be there in two weeks and will be doing a swamp tour {Honey Island with hotel pick up}. Also read about some kind of cocktail tour. I think it was with GrayLine That sounds very interesting! Have Fun !

We were just there for 4 days as well. Things I recommend:

1. Self guided tour of the Garden District %26amp; either self guided tour of Lafayette Cemetery or you can do a short guided one for cheap. After walking around the district, then a little walk along Magazine St. We also threw in a lunch in at Commander%26#39;s Palace across the street from Lafayette.

2. The Honey Island Swamp tour - it%26#39;s $45 per w/ pick up at the hotel - but you can get a $6 discount w/ online coupon.

These two things took the better part of two days during the day, but left the evening hours free to do whatever we wished.

And I think you%26#39;ll find walking around the French Quarter most fun in itself...not necessarily Bourbon St, but Royal, Chartres, and Decatur where you can just pop in and out of shops.

If you look through some trip reports on this forum, I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll have any trouble at all of finding worthwhile things to do over the course of 4 days. We actually felt like we had to leave too many things out.

We had a great time this past week on the airboat tour in Lafitte. What a beautiful area, lots of alligators! Monday we did the Vampire Tour- the guy was very entertaining and the price was right - there is a coupon in a local magazine for $4 off, so it%26#39;s $16 per adult. Maybe someone knows the name of the magazine?

Take the FREE ferry to Algiers, nice Victorian neighborhood. Just a fun place to go and walk around. They have a memorial to the soldiers who fought in the wars, and I noticed a Zatarain was on the list!

If you can get to Chalmette Battlefield, I think it%26#39;s worth seeing. The riverboats use to go there, but since Katrina, the dock is gone!

In the French Quarter on Decatur Street there is a federal ranger station Jean Lafitte? that does a free walking tour of the Quarter - I think at 9 a.m. daily. Very historical, great tour.

The WWII Museum is up and running, I enjoyed the FQF while the boyz spent about 4 hours at the museum.

These all sound like great ideas. Where can I find these ';self guided'; tours of the district and the quarter?

Thanks!

Here is a good one of the French Quarter: neworleanscvb.com/static/鈥?

Frommer%26#39;s also has some good itineraries: frommers.com/destinations/鈥?020020033.html

Traveling Dragon!!!!

Compared to St Croix, New Orleans is a much more active place. We are going down this weekend and are going to do a couple walking tours as well as hit the Jazz Fest.

If you go to www.neworleansonline.com there is a list of all the events and it seems like there is one almost every week.

Have a great trip!

Cate!!!! :-)

Oh yes, N.O. will be a very different place than STX, but that%26#39;s the fun of travelling, %26#39;ey?

Thanks above for suggestions for walking tours and such. I have much to print out before we leave tomorrow morning!!!!
