My husband and I are planning a trip to New Orleans for our anniversary this summer. We will be flying in and I believe we%26#39;ll be staying at the Dauphine Orleans hotel. I know we%26#39;ll be able to walk to pretty much anywhere in the FQ. Is there a streetcar near the hotel to take us to other places we might want to visit? Also, how easy and affordable are the cabs?
No car in New Orleans?
New Orleans is very doable without a car - as long as you do not mind walking from the main drop off points, the street car is only blocks from your hotel and can take you to many other tourist areas.
And if you are interested in any %26#39;side tours%26#39; to the plantations or a swamp tour, there are many that will pick you up at your hotel or one near by so ask the hotel concierge for assistance. For any taxi I would use United. They seem to be the most reliable.
Don%26#39;t forget to bring your rain gear!
No car in New Orleans?
No car, no problem!
The streetcars will be able to take you to most other tourist-worthy areas to visit (both St. Charles Ave and Canal St streetcars to Uptown/Garden District and City Park areas, respectively).
Also, cabs are pretty cheap too. It%26#39;s $28 one-way from the airport to hotel, and then no more than $8-10 for hard to reach by streetcar restaurants.
Swamp/plantation/city tours offer pick-up to/from your hotel as well.
I got back from my 1st trip to NO a couple of weeks ago, and no car is needed.
Everything is within walking distance in the French Quarter (and I%26#39;m not a walker). I believe that%26#39;s the charm of the FQ: you walk from point A to point B, and you get to admire all the great architecture and views along the way.
And as previously mentionned, tours will pick you up at your hotel. It%26#39;s quite easy being a tourist in NO. :)
Hope you have a great time!
I am staying at the same hotel as you are(they have GREAT rates if you pay in advance). No car is needed. You can catch a street car on Canal if you want to go outside the quarter.
