Hubby, myself and son w/disability (can%26#39;t walk far) are going to NOLA for a conference 3rd week of June. I can%26#39;t get them to dress up-probably shorts and t-shirts. I%26#39;m trying to figure out what to wear and where to go in the FQ close to the Sheraton. I thought maybe I%26#39;d take all shifts/light dresses with one wrap. Any advice? Any advice on accessibility for someone not in a wheelchair but has difficulty moving?
First time and probably last-need advice!
you really won%26#39;t want to dress up anyway. Chances are it will very very humid and warm. A carriage tour of the quarter might be a good idea for you. You can also take a cab to pretty much anywhere at very reasonable prices. Ride the streetcar-got on it right on Canal. The Aquarium is also amazing. You can ride the Ferry across the Mississippi which is free. You have a lot of options.

Your post seems to imply that you believe the Sheraton to be located inside the Quarter. Although it is close to the Quarter (just across Canal St.), it%26#39;s not actually inside the Quarter.
Ah-my mistake. My hotel info led me to believe it was in the FQ but now I see it%26#39;s ';steps away';.
Do the trolleys stop, or does one have to jump on?
There are various streetcar stops along Canal St, so you can wait at the stop and then hop on. www.norta.com/routes/route.php…
Yes the streetcars do make a complete stop for you to get on - not like in San Francisco where sometimes you have to run and hop on the moving trolley.
Thanks so much! You all have been very helpful. Any further advice of what not to miss for a one time visit? Not to be missed food?
I took my mother who also has mobility limitations last Fall. I found that cabs were any extremely economical way for us to get around. The sidewalks in the Quarter can be particularly difficult for one to navigate if they aren%26#39;t steady on their feet so I kept strolls to a minimum. I also called ahead to the restaurants we ate at to avoid long lines which would have her standing for any length of time. When I explained the situation people were more that kind %26amp; happy to accomodate us.
Have a wonderful trip!
For an inexpensive and unique dining experience, Camellia Grill is a blast. The food is decent diner food, but they have out of this world pecan waffles and pecan pie, and great milkshakes. But it%26#39;s the staff who really make the experience! They welcome you in, and make you part of the fun. It may be an impromptu singalong, or maybe Marvin will ';spank'; the calories out of your pecan pie for you with his spatula while he heats it on the grill, all the while yelling at the calories to get out.
Camellia Grill is just a few steps from one of the streetcar stops at riverbend. There is usually a line, but as another poster mentioned, I%26#39;m sure if you call ahead and explain your needs, they can get you in without having to stand in line. A plus is that the streetcar ride goes through the beautiful garden district and is generally a very relaxing ride. No A/C, but with your window open, a very nice breeze. $1.25 each way and they will stop to let you on and off, as well as regular stops.
Sorry, I forgot to mention that many places deliver. A Verti Marte ';All that Jazz'; po-boy is not to be missed, IMHO. We also love Angeli on Decatur for pizza and crazy good salads, and Quarter Master for the hot roast beef po-boys, which we think are the best in the Quarter (even better than Johnny%26#39;s), although I know others may disagree. All of these places deliver.

These two don%26#39;t have websites, but I put in the links to Yelp.com, which is a great site to see what people really think about places. And the phone #%26#39;s and adresses are at the top of each page before the reviews.

Took my 89 year old mother to NOLA in December, can tell you first hand that the buses %26amp; streetcars are very, very accomodating to someone with limited mobility.

A fun place to go is MardiGras World where many of the floats are made:

Be aware that most of the sidewalks are extremely uneven and some have potholes. So paying attention while walking is pretty important.
